Dario Franchitti can appreciate the speed and technology that goes into an America’s Cup yacht.
The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and amateur sailor got an up-close look at the latest iteration of the AC72 boat that Oracle Team USA will use in its defense of the America’s Cup in San Francisco Bay later this year.
“It was good to catch up with the people at Oracle Team USA and spend some time with (skipper) Jimmy Spithill and (helmsman) Ben Ainslie and see their boats,” said Franchitti, who visited the team's base at Pier 80 in San Francisco. “Dixie (teammate Scott Dixon) and I saw the boat about a year ago, but to see how much has changed and the development (they’ve done) and just talking to the boys after they’ve had a chance to sail them is mind-blowing. It’s just mind-blowing.”
Franchitti, who enjoys sailing on a much smaller level, was hopeful of getting a ride on San Francisco Bay with Oracle Team USA while he enjoys time in Northern California visiting the Monterrey Historics and preparing for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
“I heard Dixie may ride with the Kiwis next week,” Franchitti said. “Maybe we can do it on the same day and make a race of it.”
