Cessna Team Finishes 20th at the Brickyard 400
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) made the annual visit to the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) for the Crown Royal presents the John Wayne Walding 400. The Cessna Chevrolet SS started from the 24th position and after starting out strong, racing as high as third place, Jamie McMurray would race in the top-15 for nearly half the race, before finishing the 160-lap race with a 20th place result.
On a race track that is known for being extremely difficult to pass, the No. 1 team looked to put the Cessna Chevy SS in contention through pit strategy. It looked as though the pit strategy may cycle through in in the team’s favor as McMurray raced into the top-10 by the halfway mark of the 160-lap race.
On lap 129, McMurray would surrender the fourth position to make a final scheduled pit stop under green-flag conditions. Following that stop, McMurray reported that he may have a bad set of tires, making the car very difficult to handle. Crew chief Keith Rodden took advantage of the final caution to bring the Cessna Chevy SS down for service, new tires and a chance to gain a few positions in the closing laps. McMurray picked up four positions following that stop to finish with a 20th place result.
With his finish, McMurray remains 21st in the NSCS point standings just 63 points behind the 13th position, which is currently the final cut-off position for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
NOTES OF INTEREST:
- The Brickyard 400 was slowed by caution four times for 16 laps
- Just six races remain to determine the 16 teams that will compete for the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup
CGRFS QUOTEBOARD
Jamie McMurray – No. 1 Cessna Chevrolet SS: "We had an up and down day today”, commented McMurray. “Our Cessna Chevy started out pretty good and we raced up to the top-10. I thought we would be in a position for a solid finish. The next-to-last set of tires that we had were just not very good. We had to pit on that last caution for four new tires and that put us back in the field again. Track-position is so crucial at Indy and we just had to pass a few too many cars at the end. My crew did a good job on pit road today. I’m just disappointed that we couldn't make more of a battle to the finish".
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will head to Pocono Raceway for the Gobowling.com 400, Sunday Aug. 3, 2014. ESPN coverage will begin at 1 p.m. ET, Sirius/XM Channel 90 and MRN radio will also have live coverage.
